Items I've found useful for introducing/reinforcing concepts in a different (fun) way
Light Doodler (super-sized version) - Great for illustrating matched articulation, sustained playing, and even legato trombone technique (which is what the prof. who demonstrated it to me used it for). Equally effective for ensemble or individual instruction. It is basically a set of adjustable, sound-sensitive L.E.D. lights that light up (I always use the solid pattern) when a note is played. Describing it further wouldn't do it justice! Try it!
Floating ball game - Great for teaching air support/speed. Similar to the devices on Arnold Jacob's site except this device is not "designed to measure air volume", does provide some resistance, and I've found requires a more focused effort (especially when teaching slow/fast air speeds and especially gradual dynamic changes. Plus it's cheap enough that everyone can have one and a fun way to introduce traditional breathing exercises!
T-Qualizer - A shirt with a built-in sound meter/equalizer. Not sure if it improves my ensembles dynamics but it sure is fun! FYI, they say the sizes run large but I think they run small (at least for guys).
Share something that has worked for you!
